Position Overview

The Ohio State University (OSU) Department of Surgery is recruiting a nationally recognized basic scientist to join the Thoracic Oncology Program. This individual should have an established record of research as evidenced by publications and an active research program. This position is being recruited at the Associate Professor or Professor level.

OSU Thoracic Oncology Program consists of a cohesive multi-disciplinary team with active investigation in the areas of immunotherapy, targeted therapy, early detection, and experimental therapeutics. The program has developed a longitudinal, comprehensive, proteomics, and clinically annotated biorepository which includes blood and tissue samples, as well as a lung cancer screening clinic. A unique aspect of the program is the collaborative and synergistic interactions between our scientists and the clinical team which includes medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and surgeons. The clinical program is high volume and has a strong portfolio of clinical trials in the neoadjuvant, locally advanced, and metastatic disease setting, including phase I clinical trials and drug development.

Duties and Responsibilities

· Conceptualizes, plans, designs, implements and conducts research studies; develops and writes grant proposals to seek and obtain extramural funding to support research program; obtains and maintains NIH R01 or equivalent funding.

· Writes and publishes research in high quality peer reviewed, scientific journals; attends and makes presentations of research at national and international scientific conferences; develops national and international scholarly reputation.

· Instructs and mentors junior scientists, doctoral and postdoctoral students, medical students, residents and fellow trainees; participates in department, college and university committees and initiatives.

Requirements

· PhD or MD/PhD in an applicable field

· Established record of basic science or translational research relevant to the study of lung cancer

· Proven ability to write scientific reports and publish in scientific, peer-reviewed journals preferred

· Current, active extramural grant funding (equivalent to NIH R01)

· Qualify for academic appointment at the Assistant, Associate or Professor level – Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with previous training and experience.

The Department of Surgery, led by Dr. Timothy Pawlik, boasts a broad array of clinical, research and educational opportunities. The department is home to multiple R01 funded researchers, several training grants, and with over $15.5M in NIH funding, was ranked #11 in the Blue Ridge Rankings among departments of surgery nationally.  Our investigators collectively occupy over 25,000 square feet of laboratory space within and around the medical center campus. 

The Division of Thoracic Surgery, led by Dr Robert Merritt, provides multidisciplinary care for malignant and benign diseases of the chest.  We are known for excellence in clinical care; prioritizing educating our medical students, residents and fellows; and conducting internationally recognized clinical research. Our surgical specialists and subspecialists offer the most current surgical treatment techniques — from complex open surgery to minimally invasive robotic procedures — to provide individualized care in conjunction with multidisciplinary teams of cancer experts as part of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James).

Faculty Defined
Clinical faculty (regardless of rank) - Persons with titles of assistant professor-clinical, associate professor-clinical and professor-clinical. These faculty will have earned a doctor of medicine (MD), doctorate (PhD) or other terminal degree in the relevant field. Clinical faculty members are not eligible for tenure and are appointed for terms of three to five years. They may be reappointed to successive terms. Their principal career focus is the delivery of exemplary clinical care, and may include teaching, and/or research. ​

Tenure-Track faculty (regardless of rank) - Persons with the titles of assistant professor, associate professor, or professor who are eligible for tenure or who have obtained tenure. These faculty will have earned a doctorate (PhD), Doctor of Medicine (MD) or other terminal degree in the relevant field of study. Their primary career focus centers on research, service, and teaching. Tenure-track faculty with MD or MD/PhD degrees may also be involved in clinical care.​

Research Faculty (regardless of rank) - Persons with the titles of research assistant professor, research associate professor, or research professor. These faculty will have earned a doctorate (PhD) or other terminal degree in the relevant field of study. Research faculty members are not eligible for tenure and are appointed for terms of one to five years. Their principal career focus is research.​
