Scope of Position:  The Cytogenetics Laboratory provides Fluorescent in situ Hybridization (FISH) and Chromosome analysis on inpatient and outpatient specimens received from the OSUWMC and other local and state hospitals and physicians. The CAP, TJC and CLIA certified Cytogenetic laboratory is recognized as one of the top academic centers performing highly complex testing utilizing advanced technology. It supports outreach testing programs, and educational rotations for medical students, residents, fellows, and faculty from internal and external institutions.

 

Position Summary:  The Cytogenetic Technologist examines blood, bone marrow and solid tumor specimens from cancer patients for chromosomal changes using high resolution microscopes and a digital imaging system. The Cytogenetic Technologist is responsible for complete chromosomal analysis and/or FISH analysis in addition to processing, clerical, and other general laboratory duties related to specimen processing.  They work under the direction and supervision of the Lab Manager and Technical Directors. 

 

Minimum Qualifications

For Hire:    Bachelor's degree in medical technology, biological science or chemistry or certified Cytogenetics program 

ASCP certification within 1 year of hire or specialty certification within 2 years of hire

Post-degree experience in a Cytogenetics lab setting and experience in cancer cytogenetic analysis preferred.

 

On going:  Maintains current certification by education credits; meets health surveillance requirements. Demonstrates competence in technical, interpersonal and cognitive skills required to meet essential job functions."
