The GRA will function as a trainee embedded work systems engineering and human factors practitioner, conducting systems safety and human and organizational performance (HOP) research for the OSUWMC James Cancer Hospital under the supervision of the Environment of Care Safety Consultant / Human Factors Specialist. 

Scope of Position/Position Summary:

The Graduate Research Associate (GRA) is a part of the Healthcare Work Systems Engineering workgroup within The James Quality and Patient Safety Department and led by the Environment of Care Safety Consultant / Human Factors Specialist. The GRA will function as a trainee embedded work systems engineering and human factors practitioner, conducting systems safety and human and organizational performance (HOP) research for the OSUWMC James Cancer Hospital under the supervision of the Environment of Care Safety Consultant / Human Factors Specialist. The GRA's responsibilities may include applying and mastering research concepts, practices, or methods of scholarship; organizing or analyzing data; writing reports; presenting findings; collaborating with others in preparing publications. As Key Personnel on a research project, the GRA may identify and assess persons eligible for project participation, discuss potential subject enrollment, gather ethnographic and quantitative data, and perform data analysis. Work is accomplished in collaboration with other quality, safety, and operational workgroups as well as with frontline workers and managers. The Environment of Care Safety Consultant will connect with the GRA’s academic supervisor to coordinate the GRA’s planned learning objectives and interests with opportunities and focus areas in the operational environment.

Minimum Qualifications: 

For Hire – OSU student enrolled in a healthcare-related (e.g., Nursing, Medicine, Health Sciences, etc.), Integrated Systems Engineering, or Data Analytics graduate program. Possesses excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate in a positive, consistent and enthusiastic manner. Interacts cooperatively and collaboratively with diverse groups.  Familiarity with systems thinking, modern approaches to industrial and healthcare safety, human and organizational performance, just culture, high reliability, and/or patterns of joint cognitive work is preferred. Students not familiar with this material will receive instruction and coaching in these areas, including required reading. Upon hire, commitment is required for the duration of one semester; however, multiple-semester commitments will be considered.

Ongoing – Demonstrates technical, interpersonal, and cognitive competence required to meet essential job functions.
