SCOPE OF POSITION
Wexner Medical Center at The Ohio State University and OSU Outpatient Behavioral Heath are committed to enhancing the quality of care our patients receive. The Psychiatric Care Technician [PCT] functions as a member of a team of care providers cultivating a culture of collaboration, enthusiasm, and mutual respect. The team, consisting of the Staff Nurse [RN], Psychiatric Care Technician [PCT], and other interdisciplinary staff provide patient care and supportive services that are directed at achieving patient care outcomes, maximizing the patient’s involvement in his/her own care plan, improving service levels, reducing the length of hospitalization, and decreasing costs. Patients and their family will experience the benefits of patient-focused care through the integrated skills of all team members. Services provided include interventional and outpatient psychiatry care for psychiatric patients.
POSITION SUMMARY
The PCT is responsible for providing a variety of direct and indirect patient care activities, as supervised and directed by the provider. Care is provided in collaboration with the patient, family, and other members of the patient-focused care team. Overall responsibilities are to assist the team in meeting patient care needs. Under the direction and supervision of the provider and/or RN, the PCT assists with maintaining clinical operations in compliance with hospital and regulatory agency standards, and in accordance with the established Wexner Medical Center at The Ohio State University patient satisfaction philosophy.
The PCT is responsible for:
Maintaining a therapeutic environment.
Reinforcing patient education.
Maintaining safety.
Emergency preparedness.
Infection control.
Information management.
Reporting patient’s complaints to the patient’s assigned provider(s).
Implementing appropriate interventions.
Reporting patient behaviors indicative of fall risk.
Technical skills include:
Administering TMS treatments according to protocols provided by mental healthcare professionals.
Enabling effective treatment by accurately positioning the TMS equipment's electromagnetic coil.
Ensuring head and neck support in order for patients to remain completely still during sessions.
Applying therapeutic holds & restraint in physical crisis situations.
The PCT performs clerical functions, as assigned.
Measures and records patients' vital signs, such as height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respirations and other routine supportive patient care.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
For Hire: High School Diploma or GED required. Successful completion of designated portions of PCA training and additional PCT training.
Ongoing: Demonstrates competence to meet essential job functions. Maintains knowledge related to patient care issues, performance improvement and cost reduction, current policies, procedures, and protocols; completes annual education and health requirements; maintains current CPR. Demonstrates computer skills required to meet job functions.
Physical/Visual/Mental Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to:
Transport/move patients and equipment, using stairs particularly in emergency situations, in order to provide care.
Move objects weighing up to 50 pounds around the work environment to provide care.
Provide patient care, perform necessary duties, and maintain patient safety on the nursing unit.
Set up/adjust the various patient equipment items in use at Wexner Medical Center at The Ohio State University.
Apply therapeutic physical holds and restraints in patient crisis situations.
Communicate clearly in order to facilitate the patient care plan.
Demonstrate skills of de-escalation and crisis management.
