Job Description
The Office of Legal Affairs, under the direction of the Senior Vice President and General Counsel, provides legal representation and advice to the university and all of its constituent parts, including the Board of Trustees, the President, Provost, faculty and academic departments, the Office of Student Life, Human Resources, Advancement, Athletics, Public Safety, Business and Finance, and the Wexner Medical Center among many others. As one of the largest universities in the nation, Ohio State is a multifaceted institution, with a sophisticated and leading-edge legal practice that touches nearly every area of law, including litigation, labor and employment, public contracting, real estate and construction, intellectual property, research and technology transfer, business transactions, taxation and benefits, administrative law, health care law, public safety and criminal law matters, federal and state constitutional and public law issues, and more.
The Senior Assistant General Counsel will report to the Senior Assistant Vice President, Senior Associate General Counsel, and Director of Risk Management. The Senior Assistant General Counsel, under general direction, will provide legal and risk advice and services to the Wexner Medical Center with a specific focus on complex risk management matters. The Senior Assistant General Counsel shall work independently and in close collaboration with Wexner Medical Center business units to provide legal and risk guidance in areas that include, without limitation, complex event investigation, regulatory matters, licensure concerns, pre-litigation, scope of practice, telehealth, general medical legal issues, development of risk reduction strategies, independently develop and conduct educational sessions, committee membership, independently provide attorney on-call services for the Wexner Medical Center. The Senior Assistant General Counsel will work within Risk Management and will be involved in all aspects of risk management including risk prevention, risk identification, risk mitigation, and claims investigation and management. Responsibilities will also include conducting legal research and analysis, and the implementation of special projects, as assigned. The Senior Assistant General Counsel will also assist with special projects as assigned by either the Director or Associate Director of Risk Management or the Senior Vice President and General Counsel.
Minimum Qualifications
J.D. degree from an accredited law school and admission to the Ohio Bar, or eligibility for Ohio Bar admission within one year. A minimum of four (4) years of legal practice experience is required. Four to eight (4–8) years of relevant experience is preferred, and prior experience in risk management is desired.
