Scope of Position
Financial Counselor 1 provides essential front-line financial support to patients by assisting with insurance verification, reviewing basic coverage information, and helping patients understand their financial responsibilities. The role supports the financial counseling team by completing eligibility checks, gathering required documentation, and guiding patients through initial steps of financial assistance programs.
Working closely with registration, billing, and clinical staff, the Financial Counselor I helps ensure accurate patient information, smooth workflow, and timely access to care. The position focuses on developing foundational knowledge of insurance processes, hospital financial policies, and patient communication while developing compassionate, service-oriented support to individuals experiencing financial stress. As an entry-level role, the Financial Counselor I builds core competencies that contribute to the overall effectiveness of the revenue cycle and patient experience.
Position Summary
The Financial Counselor I support patients by verifying insurance eligibility, assisting with basic financial assistance processes, and helping patients understand their benefit plans and financial responsibilities. The role manages daily workqueues, maintains accurate documentation, communicates promptly with patients and clinical teams, and collaborates with care staff to identify financial support options. The Financial Counselor I develops foundational knowledge of insurance structures, EPIC financial counseling tools, and hospital assistance programs while providing compassionate, service-oriented support and ensuring smooth patient flow.
Minimum Qualifications
For Hire:
Career Roadmap: High School diploma or GED. 0 years experience required. 0-2 years of relevant experience preferred.
On going:
Demonstrates competency measured by annual quality checks. Participates in Health System and Departmental In-services, education forums, and meetings as required.
