The Oncology Pod is a specialized unit within the Emergency Department and one of the few dedicated oncology emergency care settings in the country. It is designed to meet the urgent and complex needs of cancer patients while preserving the fast-paced, high-acuity environment of emergency medicine. This model combines rapid intervention with the expertise and patient-centered care expected from The James.
Patients present with a wide spectrum of issues, including complications from cancer or its treatment as well as unrelated acute illnesses. This variety demands sharp clinical judgment and offers nurses continual opportunities to build advanced skills in triage, symptom management, and critical care.
As a smaller, focused unit within the broader ED, the Oncology Pod fosters strong team cohesion and a supportive work environment. Nurses form lasting relationships with patients and colleagues alike, providing continuity in a setting where that is rarely possible.
For nurses seeking a challenging and meaningful role, the Oncology Pod offers something rare. It is emergency nursing with a level of specialization and purpose found in very few hospitals, fully aligned with Ohio State’s long-term strategy to deliver exceptional care through a best-in-class operating model.
